The capital suffocates under the traffic jams.

The Democratic Republic of Congo's capital, Kinshasa, stands today as the largest francophone city on the African continent with a growing population of over 15 million inhabitants.

The demographic pressure on the transportation system, in addition to poor road maintenance and the concentration of economic activity in the city center has resulted in  Kinshasa's traffic being described as generally unruly if not outright chaotic.Indeed, road users frequently complain about the lack of secondary roads, high public transportation prices, poor driver etiquette, persistent extortion attempts by traffic police officers, and a general lack of adequate infrastructure.

The current administration's attempt to fluidify traffic in the DRC's capital has focused on massive infrastructure projects, notably through the announcement of 7 new bridges to be distributed across the city.

Originally planned to last 6 months, construction is still ongoing 2 years after it began.5 of the 7 bridges recently became accessible to the public in January 2021. This study captures Kinshasa inhabitants' perceptions in the weeks following their inauguration, and highlights the impact of the road network congestion on worker productivity.
